Leash Reactivity & Behavior Training in Miami

Level II: Refinement. Reactive dog training in Miami for pulling, lunging, poor recall, and distractions, with owner handling and real-world practice.

Leash Reactivity and Behavior Correction in Miami

Refinement is for the dog that already has patterns forming: pulling, reactivity, selective listening, overexcitement, and poor control around distractions. MK9's Level II program focuses on behavior correction, leash reactivity, distraction work, owner handling, and real-world application.

Your dog learns what is expected. You learn how to create the behavior you want.

Why Refinement Matters

Reactivity Is Common, and It Has a Cause

In a study of 13,700 dogs, 72.5% showed at least one problematic anxiety-related behavior, and 17% were afraid of other dogs (Salonen et al., 2020). A dog that lunges or barks is often afraid, frustrated, or overexcited, not "bad".

Knowing Commands Isn't Enough

In a study of 1,984 dogs surrendered to shelters, 40% had at least one behavioral reason, and obedience-class attendance made no difference to why they were given up (Salman et al., 2000). Refinement works on behavior in real life, not just commands in a quiet room.

Patterns Get Stronger With Time

Every lunge that makes the other dog go away teaches your dog that lunging works. The sooner the pattern is addressed, the less practice it gets.

What to Expect

Every MK9 program follows the same path: understand the situation, identify the right plan, then build the standard.

1. A Free 30-Minute Discovery Call

Tell us what's happening, when it started, and what life with your dog looks like right now. This is where fit is determined.

2. A Personal Evaluation

GuiAlix Douyon (G) reviews your dog's age, breed, environment, behavior patterns, and your goals. If the reactivity involves aggression or a bite history, G will discuss whether Level III: Transformation is the safer path.

3. Structured, Real-World Training

Refinement works on behavior correction, leash reactivity, and distraction work at a distance your dog can handle, then builds toward the real situations that trigger the behavior. Training happens where your dog actually lives: your home, your sidewalks, your neighborhood.

4. Owner Education

The dog learns the commands. The owner learns how to lead. You learn to communicate with consistency, timing, and control, so the results hold when the session ends.

5. Lifetime Warranty Support

The relationship doesn't end when the program ends. Every program includes:

  • Monthly Group Tune-Ups: socialization, work around distractions, fine-tuning commands, and deterring unwanted behavior.
  • Unlimited Phone Consultations: problem-solving support by phone.
  • Annual Courtesy Visits: a yearly review of all commands.
  • Newborn Introductions: adjustment-phase support when a new baby joins the family.

Is the Refinement Program Right for Your Dog?

Refinement is the best fit for:

  • On-leash reactivity toward dogs or people
  • Overexcitement in public
  • Poor recall or inconsistent obedience
  • Dogs that struggle around distractions
  • Owners who need better handling skills

What the Research Says About Behavior Correction

Timing Changes What a Dog Learns

In one study, 60% of dogs learned a task when the reward came immediately, but only 25% when it came one second late (Browne, 2015). Owner handling in Refinement includes timing, because late feedback teaches the wrong lesson.

Pain Can Drive Reactivity

A review of problem behavior estimated conservatively that about a third of referred cases involve a painful condition (Mills et al., 2020). If the reactivity started suddenly or is getting worse, see your veterinarian first.

Questions

Refinement Program (Level II): Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my dog only reactive on leash?

The leash limits a dog's options: it can't approach, and it can't create distance, so it reacts. Fear is a common driver. In a study of 13,700 dogs, 17% were afraid of other dogs (Salonen et al., 2020). Refinement works on leash reactivity, distraction work, and owner handling.

Could pain be behind my dog's reactivity?

It can be. A review of problem behavior estimated conservatively that about a third of referred cases involve a painful condition, and in some caseloads close to 80% (Mills et al., 2020). If the change was sudden, talk to your veterinarian before starting a training program.

My dog knows the commands. Why won't they listen outside?

Commands learned in a quiet place don't automatically carry over to sidewalks and parks. In one shelter study, obedience-class attendance made no difference to why dogs were surrendered (Salman et al., 2000). Refinement practices behavior around real distractions, in real places.

Does the timing of my feedback really matter?

Yes. In one study, a one-second delay cut the share of dogs that learned a task from 60% to 25% (Browne, 2015). MK9 teaches owners to communicate with consistency, timing, and control.

What's the difference between Refinement and Transformation?

Refinement addresses developing issues such as pulling, reactivity, and selective listening. Level III: Transformation is for serious behavior challenges, including aggression, resource guarding, fear-based behavior, and bite history, and requires G's personal evaluation. The Discovery Call is where we find the right fit.
